Heuristic Evaluation and Expert Review
A heuristic evaluation involves the evaluation of the user interface according to usability heuristics by usability engineering experts. Evaluations can be performed at any stage of development with design concept sketches, working prototypes, or final products. Evaluations of an early prototype can identify potential design or usability problems early without the higher costs normally associated with usability testing.
Heuristic evaluations differ from expert reviews in that they are based more heavily on accepted usability heuristics, whereas expert reviews rely more heavily on the personal experience and opinion of the expert. In addition, heuristic evaluations are usually conducted by two or more usability experts who summarize their results in a joint, consolidated report. The ISO 9241 family of standards serve as the basis for heuristic evaluations.
